March 21 recap

Commander Levatt summoned Lyta, Kazbich, and Gobmush into the Republic embassy on Myzil V for an important mission.  First, we introduced Jazz Sharmista, Kazbich's new follower: a slutty Zeltron who acts as his lawyer; and Oro, Lyta's new follower, a stoic Mon Calamari medic.

The Hammerhead cruiser Champion of Dantooine, stationed above Myzil V, had suffered an outbreak of Cardooinian chills, an airborne but nonlethal virus that had quickly incapacitated most of the ship.  Lyta and Oro were being sent to help concoct a vaccine, while Gobmush, Kazbich and Jazz were there to make sure it wasn't a Sith plot.

Everybody got into their hazmat suits, then took the Raraza out to dock with the Champion of Dantooine.  Lyta and Oro got to work on the vaccine with the Bothan ship captain, Captain Kre'yka, while Gobmush began searching the ship and Kazbich checked the video feeds.  No one actually knew how the virus had gotten out, it seemed.

Gobmush searched the bridge and the maintenance area, then decided to start searching the passenger cabins.  When he got to the first one, a Duros engineer, Lod Bell, angrily wanted to know on whose authority Gobmush was searching rooms.  Lod called security, and the security chief, a large Whiphid named Waroopa, came over.  Jazz convinced Waroopa to let Gobmush search the rooms.

Kazbich searched the ship's computers and came upon a crew manifest, including a brig listing.  The computer stated that a woman named Marina was in the brig — a woman from Kazbich's past.  He went down there and after a surprised reunion (he learned she'd survived Kelly's betrayal on Taris, and had been smuggling in the Core Worlds before being grabbed by the Republic), used the ship's security logs to free her and grab her equipment, then smuggle her back to the Raraza.

Gobmush, on his thorough search, found that the virus containment capsule was flushed down the refresher of Bell's room.  He called over Captain Kre'yka, who put out an alert to arrest Bell.  He wasn't in any of the monitored areas, but Gobmush deduced that he was in the droid storage room (based on clues in his cabin), and led a team there to arrest him.

The Republic security guards got to work examining the video feed for clues, leading Kazbich to realize he'd forgotten to blank out the security footage of him freeing Marina.  He got Jazz to "distract" the guards while he commed Gobmush to say that the person who'd released the virus was holding him hostage in the maintenance bay, and that if they accessed the computers or watched the security footage, a bomb would explode.  Gobmush did not believe this for a second.

At the same time, Lyta talked to Bell in his cell, and became convinced that Bell was innocent.  In interviewing the doctors who'd been in the medical lab when the virus was released, they realized that Waroopa's story didn't check out and that he must've been the one to release the virus.  Gobmush went to confront him, leading to a melee in the medical lab where Gobmush killed Waroopa with his arg'garok, only for Lyta to revivify him so he could be arrested and interrogated later.  Captain Kre'yka confronted Kazbich about freeing Marina (and he'd also been trying to falsify evidence against Bell, though the captain didn't know that), and simply said they'd keep him informed about their ongoing investigation.

The party got back on the Raraza and Marina revealed herself to the crew.  Looks like now it's a crew of 8, plus the droids.

(I know I'm missing some details here; that's why I usually post the recaps the same day, not the next day.  If anybody remembers something that I missed, post a comment.)

Fun with DMing

Here is an article about the Star Wars RPG in general that I found very amusing.  I'd like to think I'm a good enough GM that I don't expect you to know everything about Star Wars...

Legacy Assessment

I've got the Legacy Era Campaign Guide now.  I've read over it quite a bit and it's a very good book.  I must admit this was the book I was least looking forward to — knowing that a lot of stuff in here wouldn't work in our current campaign — but it's still mighty impressive.

None of the new species are super-spectacular, but the Nagai looks like it would be fun, and it's good to have stats for species like Klatooinian and Weequay.  And Zeltrons really are masters of persuasion — they get a +5 bonus to change the attitudes of others.

The new Legacy destiny is pretty nice — it's very open-ended, but you're the descendant of somebody famous and so you either live up to or reject following their path (whatever that might be).  You never complete it per se, but you do get new uses for Destiny Points instead.  For example, a character with the Qel-Droma legacy can spend a Destiny Point to double the results of your Force Point rolls for an encounter, or a character with the Solo legacy can spend a Destiny Point to get an automatic natural 20 on your next Mechanics check.  It's very broad and open to DM and player design.

New talents: The Jedi get good combat talents.  Defensive Acuity gives you, when fighting defensively, +1 die of damage with lightsabers and +2 on your checks to Block or Deflect.  Precision is a good talent for those who only wield one lightsaber and don't do Double Attacks — it lets you make a lightsaber attack as a standard action, and a hit deals damage and reduces the target's speed for one turn.

The Noble gets the Provocateur talent tree, which is all about turning your enemies against each other.  The talents do things like negating insight and morale bonuses, healing allies, and getting enemies to "accidentally" hit each other.  The Scoundrel gets two new Misfortune talents — Seducer and Seize Object — plus the Yuuzhan Vong Biotech tree, which sadly will not apply to our games.  Scouts get the Versatility talent tree, which are some basically nice defensive abilities.  Soldier gets the Brute Squad talent tree, which gives you melee bonuses when you and your allies surround and beat up somebody.  Three new Brawler talents also make unarmed combat significantly better — Hammerblow, which doubles your Strength bonus to attack rolls when unarmed and holding no items, is practically a necessity.

The feats are surprisingly general-purpose, but good.  Autofire Assault gives you extra damage and a bonus to hit on autofire attacks if you attack the same area more than once.  Brink of Death will ensure you never accidentally kill somebody in combat.  Conversely, Fatal Hit means you will more often kill people in combat — you don't have to deal damage at or above the target's threshold when they hit 0 HP to kill somebody, you just have to bring them to 0 HP.  There's some good feats that improve grappling.  Return Fire lets you attack out of turn when somebody misses you with a ranged attack.  Vehicle Systems Expertise makes you a master of working ship shields.  Zero Range gives you an extra die of damage when you make a ranged attack at an adjacent target.

Prestige classes get a boost as well.  The Bounty Hunter gets the Force Hunter tree, which improves your defenses against Force-users.  The Elite Trooper, as required by contract, gets another new talent tree, the Protection tree, which functions as a pretty strong bodyguard build.  (Seriously now — Threats gave us the Teras Kasi tree, KOTOR gave us Mandalorian Warrior, Force Unleashed gave us Critical Master, and Clone Wars gave us Melee Specialist and Republic Commando.  I think Elite Trooper now has more talents than Soldier.)  Gunslinger gets the Carbineer tree, which lets it use rifles and blaster carbines just as well as pistols.  Jedi Knight gets the Jedi Refugee tree, which makes it difficult to sense or track.  Officer gets the Fugitive Commander tree, which makes it a master of deception and staying alive in tight spots.  Sith Apprentice gets the Sith Commander tree, which enriches your allies with the power of the dark side.

The two new prestige classes are era-inappropriate — Imperial Knight and Shaper.  Imperial Knight is a Jedi/Soldier hybrid that is great at wearing armor (really, really great at wearing armor) and wielding a lightsaber with other Imperial Knights.  The Shaper is a Yuuzhan Vong-only prestige class that is good at working with biotech and can give its allies Vong implants on the fly.

New Force powers: Ballistakinesis lets you hurl small debris as an area attack.  Combustion creates a small explosion.  Dark Transfer is Cade Skywalker's dark side healing ability.  Detonate deals damage to unattended objects.  Enlighten lets one ally use your Use the Force result in place of one roll or defense for one round.  Lightning Burst is a weaker Force Lightning that explodes in a burst and can be maintained from round to round.  Obscure clouds the mind of somebody just as they attack you.  Prescience gives you a bonus to defenses and attacks against a particular target for one round.  Stagger pushes an enemy away and deals a little damage.

Force Talents: Move Massive Object lets you make Move Object attacks as area attacks, though it requires a Force Point and has a prerequisite.  Telekinetic Stability lets you avoid get involuntarily moved.  Dark Preservation lets you spend Force Points (and gain Dark Side Points) to avoid moving down the condition track.  The two new Force traditions are the Disciples of Twilight (mystics who can use the Force to bend light and hide in the shadows) and the Ember of Vahl (a fire-worshipping dark side cult).

Also, the Force chapter has official rules for death sticks.  Kazbich, rejoice.

Not much super-powerful in the equipment section: some new guns, and rules for Yuuzhan Vong equipment and implants.  Some new droids, too.  There's a lot of new droids, vehicles, and starships, as well as templates to bring equipment from older eras into the Legacy era.

The campaign section emphasizes heavily that this is an era in which just about any character type and equipment might show up, and it also details the Heirloom Item rules first created in a Web Enhancement online.  The Galactic Gazetteer doesn't have anything too shocking, but it's cool that the writers were able to take some creative liberties in this era.

The rest of the book is stats, and stats, and stats, and stats.  I'm of a mixed feeling about these, because there is a whole lot of them, but some of them needed some editing work — some of them refer to talents that don't exist at all, and some of them don't make any sense ("Bantha" Rawk is supposed to be a former Jedi turned mechanic, but he's statted as pure Scoundrel with not even Force Sensitivity, even though in his first appearance he uses the Force).  I admit that I have not read these stats too thoroughly yet, as they will not apply to our current game, but there are some new species statted out throughout — Devaronian, Advosze, Sakiyan, and Chadra-Fan.  (I may have to make a new Vihn character for Andy.  He'll know what I mean by that.)  Also, they seem to stat out every single character who's appeared in the Legacy comics so far, no matter how minor, which I find to be a little excessive, but oh well.

Overall a good book, a lot more useful to me if I were playing in this era, but solidly done as always.

Shameless Self-Promotion

Not RPG related, but I've got a new article up on Jim's Wausau Comics blog about good places to start reading Star Wars comics if you're interested in reading them but don't know where to start.

Legacy Era Campaign Guide spoilers

Updated 3/7/09: Class talent tree names added.

New races: Chagrian, Chiss, Codru-ji, Klatooinian, Nagai, Weequay, Yuuzhan Vong, Zeltron, Chadra-Fan, Advosze, Vahla, Sakiyan.

New talents for all five classes (of course); Jedi gets some Imperial Knight stuff, as well as a talent called Aggressive Negotiator (might be something for Lyta), Noble gets Provocateur, Scoundrels gets Yuuzhan Vong Biotech, Scout gets Versatility, Soldier gets Brute Squad.

New feats: Attack Combo (Fire and Strike), Attack Combo (Melee), Attack Combo (Ranged), Autofire Assault, Autofire Sweep, Biotech Specialist, Biotech Surgery, Brink of Death, Feat of Strength, Fatal Hit, Galactic Alliance Military Training, Grapple Resistance, Knock Heads, Multi-Grab, Rancor Crush, Return Fire, Returning Bug, Vehicle Systems Expertise, Zero Range.  Attack Combo feats give you a damage bonus if you hit with more than one consecutive attack on a turn.

New prestige classes: Imperial Knight (has Knight's Armor and Knight's Resolve talent trees) and Vong Shaper.  New talents for a lot of existing prestige classes.

New destiny: Legacy.  You are the descendant of a famous and historical figure; there's no bonus for completion (after all, you're always related to that person), but you do get bonuses when you spend Destiny Points.  Bonuses vary depending on whether you choose to embrace or reject your destiny.

New Force powers: Ballistakinesis, Combustion, Dark Transfer, Detonate, Enlighten, Force Shield (repeat), Lightning Burst, Obscure, Prescience, Stagger.  New Force techniques, too.  Three new Force talents: Move Massive Object (lets you use Move Object as an area attack, for a Force Point), Telekinetic Stability (helps protect you from being moved by others' telekinetic powers), Dark Preservation.

New Force-using traditions: Disciples of Twilight (apparently similar to witches of Dathomir), and Flame of Vahl.

Lots of new starships and vehicles, including heirloom items as well as vehicle and weapon templates.  Also a lot devoted to Yuuzhan Vong biotech, as it's in use in this era.  Also a template for Vong-shaped beasts, as well as how to give people Vong parts.  Sadly, it goes without saying that I'm not allowing Yuuzhan Vong biotech in my game, as it's definitely era-inappropriate.

Stats are apparently odd in the book: Bantha Rawk is a former Jedi in the comics, but he's statted as pure Scoundrel with no Force sensitivity.

(Note: I have no idea what a Vahla or the Flame of Vahl is; Wookieepedia turns up nothing, so I assume they're a new, original species.)

March 3 recap

With a full group playing, the game picked up with the party finding Logger in a tube (in a huge room full of these kolto tank-like tubes) in ancient ruins at a Eutix Research Laboratories excavation site on Myzil V.  Kazbich trying to hack the computer to open the tube didn't work; neither did Gobmush's arg'garok.

Kelif saw someone among the tubes as Kazbich followed behind, and Lyta also seemed to spot someone, with Ras following.  Gobmush settled for looking for a door.  After lingering in the ruins, each of the party was beset by a dark side vision.  Kelif was set upon by Mandalore the Ultimate, who admonished him for bringing dishonor to the Mandalorians by becoming a mercenary and indiscriminate killer.  Kazbich found himself surrounded by Canderous Ordo, Calo Nord, Kelly, the Quarren shopkeeper he shot, and Marina, who asked him how he expects to solve his problems and live his life by killing everyone.  Gobmush was mocked for his species' predilection for violence and told it was likely that even his eventual children and further generations would probably throw their lives away in pointless battles.  Lyta met up with a Selkath Jedi who was suffering an unusual infection, and when Lyta could not heal it, the Jedi pointed out that Lyta had a rare gift — Force sensitivity — and was throwing it away, when there were many other people in the galaxy who would do anything for it.  Finally, Ras came upon her Master, Asa Ulara, mortally wounded in a fight with a Dark Jedi; Ulara begged Ras to use a dark side artifact to heal her, saying that she was strong enough to control it, in an attempt to tempt her the same way she had been tempted to the dark side before.

Eventually, Gobmush found a room with all sorts of ancient machinery in it.  Kazbich figured out how to get it working again, which activated power to the tubes.  Kazbich figured out that the tubes were keeping the people inside alive, and opened up two — Logger and a Gamorrean — realizing that with 10,000 tubes, there was no way to get everybody out.  While carrying them out through the entrance, a figure warned them that they would not leave the ruins alive, and revealed itself to be a dark doppleganger of Logger.  After a short but fierce duel, Kazbich shot the dark Logger dead, causing it to disappear into the nether of the dark side.

The crew boarded the Raraza and took off on the eight-hour flight back to Aekaiki City.  Soon, while under the capable flying of, um, Catchy the sentinel droid, the ship was hailed by two Eutix defense fighters, who warned that they had violated Eutix airspace and should land in a nearby air zone for boarding and questioning.  Kazbich took the opportunity to slip into the laser cannon turret and shoot first, and the crew quickly made short work of the fighters.

Upon arrival, the party saw a large number of Republic and Sith ships converging onto Aekaiki City.  The Raraza was ordered to land in a new docking bay near the new Republic embassy, where they were greeted by Commander Levatt (a Duros) and a Republic platoon.  It took some convincing, but Levatt convinced the party to come to the embassy for debriefing, where they met Jedi Master Jenica Vigil and her Padawan, Bastila Shan.  Levatt explained that he was in charge of security during the Council negotiations for control of the planet, and the Skakoan Council for Development had enacted a strict no-violence rule to prevent hostilities.  Master Vigil was the lead negotiator for the Republic.  Gobmush was quickly offered a job with the Republic, and Levatt managed to finagle Kazbich and Kelif to work for the Republic as well, promising Kelif's Mandalorian helmet, a new arm for Kazbich, and per diems for both (though the threat of "join us or be Republic fugitives for being an armed Mandalorian and for being implicated on an Exchange wiretap" did come into play).  The Republic is running low on soldiers now, and it needs all the help it can get to stop the Sith.

Holonet News Vol. 46 No. 83

DM's Note: Holonet News is a new semi-regular posting detailing other events happening around the galaxy at the same time as whatever the party is doing.  Most of it is for fluff, but there may occasionally be a hint about future game events included.

38 JEDI CONFIRMED DEAD IN TELOS ATTACK
THANI, TELOS — In the weeks after the Sith's orbital bombardment of Telos IV, Jedi observers have counted thirty-eight of their Order among the missing or dead, among them 68-year-old Cathar Jedi Master Sylvar, famed for fighting in the Sith War against the hordes of Exar Kun.  Bothan Jedi Knight Riskyr Kas'hag, one of the Jedi physicians tending the wounded on the planet, said, "This is a difficult day for the Jedi Order; today we have lost one of our greatest heroes.  Sylvar was a true role model for the Republic; though she lost nearly everything in the Sith War, she remained true to the light until the very end."  Anti-Jedi organization Sentients Against Jedi Intervention quickly seized on the report, releasing a statement that "this confirms our belief that the Jedi were operating an illegal base on Telos IV under the Republic's nose."  Identifying bodies has proven very difficult for the Republic, as the Sith attack cracked the planetary crust, releasing acidic vapor into the atmosphere, which means only specifically modified and protected ships and personnel currently are allowed on the planet.

THREE MORE PLANETS SECEDE FROM REPUBLIC
CORUSCANT — The Senate was troubled today by news that three more Outer Rim worlds have announced their intentions to secede from the Galactic Republic.  Only one, Saleucami, has openly declared its support for the Sith; a statement from the Saleucami Prime Minister said that he does not believe the Republic has the military ability to survive another war.  The other two, Baros and Nalondir, each stated that their infrastructure is presently too badly damaged to contribute to the Republic war effort.  Baros' trade exports have suffered in recent months due to its proximity to colonies belonging to former Mandalorian troops, and Nalondir was attacked early in the Mandalorian Wars due to its proximity to Taris.  The Republic has dispatched diplomatic envoys to each of the three planets in hopes of bringing the three planets back into the Republic fold.

MAJOR EXCHANGE FIGURE ARRESTED IN STING
TARIS — Batorine Exports chief officer Ganar was arrested on Taris as the result of a year-long wiretapping operation into the intergalactic criminal syndicate known as the Exchange.  Ganar was believed to be one of the top lieutenants in the organization, and according to Republic Bureau of Investigation documents released today, Ganar had his hands in money laundering, racketeering, and blackmail, among other crimes, through a variety of dummy businesses and organizations, and was believed to be an associate of suspected Exchange underboss Davik Kang.  At the press conference, Sullustan chief investigator Lt. Sian Aarb said, "We've taken a major step today to making the streets of Taris safe once again, but as long as Davik Kang is still on Taris, this investigation remains ongoing."  Kang, a well-known galactic investor, has long been suspected of being connected to the Exchange, though no convicting evidence has ever been produced.  Kang had no comment.
